Why are my family anti-leftist?
#1
I'm getting uncomfortable with my right-wing views because my family are uncompromisingly anti-leftist. I'm feeling uncomfortable about my views made by my family background. It's like holding right-wing beliefs mean nothing when the rest of the world is more left of America. If I opened out to them what I truly believe, they'll tell me I'm an uninformed idiot socialist. :(

What can I do?

political views and opinions wax and wane with time and maturity. They change based on a lot of things, especially within your own established politics and those of your family. Winston Churchill said "Show me a young conservative and I will show you a man without a heart. Show me an old liberal and I will show you a man without a brain" - not saying that this is true, by any means, but just saying that people are far more likely to be left leaning (not meaning a leftist or a socialist, but just more left than they otherwise might be) while they are young and developing, and then as they mature they come to a more realistic and pragmatic approach to politics, that often sends them more and more to the right. All of this left vs right is, of course, very relative. I am a right wing republican, but compared to many in my family, I am downright radical because I don't hold to the republican party line - but then according to many of my coworkers and those that I went to grad school with, I am such a hard core heartless capitalist that I am beyond redemption.

You believe what you believe, and so long as you have reasoning behind it, they ought to accept that it is your opinion - even if they don't agree. Just don't go spouting rhetoric because you saw it on some partisan news outlet.

Good luck, and stay true to yourself, but keep an open mind.

Just reply with "I would like to agree with you, but we can't both be wrong," and casually walk away.

Stay informed on the issues and continue to form your own opinion about things, as you have been doing. I suggest you avoid politics talk when around your family but reasonably and cordially disagree if the subject should come up.

What the... not even I would be mean to, let's say, my children or wife if they said they were left-wing. If they are going to insult, just walk away and ignore them. Everyone in my family is liberal and I am the only conservative. You'll get used to it :)

That is exactly what I do. I ignore subjects related to politics with my family, I'd rather talk about science. Or my school. Or anything not that formal, it's family after all.
